How to Use GPX Navigation with Apple CarPlay

Apple CarPlay does not navigate a GPX file by itself. You need a CarPlay-compatible navigation app on the iPhone that understands GPX tracks and sends the navigation view to the vehicle display. The GPX file and the navigation logic stay on the phone; CarPlay provides the larger in-vehicle interface.

Step 1 — Prepare the GPX on your iPhone

Import the GPX file into your navigation app before starting the trip. Check that the route looks right on the map, and download offline maps if you expect poor mobile coverage along the way. Doing this at home, on Wi-Fi, is the difference between a smooth departure and fiddling with the phone in the car.

Step 2 — Connect to CarPlay

Connect the iPhone to the vehicle using whatever CarPlay method the vehicle supports — wired or wireless. Open the navigation app from the CarPlay screen; it appears there automatically if it supports CarPlay.
