How to Navigate a GPX Without Internet

Yes, you can navigate a GPX track without internet. Your phone's GPS receiver does not need mobile data to determine your position. What normally requires connectivity is downloading maps, receiving live online information or calculating a new route.

GPS and internet are not the same thing

GPS signals come from satellites, not from your mobile network. A phone keeps determining latitude, longitude, speed and direction with zero cellular coverage. The usual problem is different: many navigation apps stream their map data from the internet. If the map has not been downloaded beforehand, your position still works — while the map underneath it disappears. GPS still works; the map is the part you need to prepare.

What you need before going offline

1. The GPX track on the device.
2. The required offline maps downloaded.
3. Location permission enabled for the navigation app.
4. Enough battery or power for the trip.
5. Any route that depends on server-side calculation prepared in advance.
